Since 2001, the program has worked with needy families of the Valle Hermoso zone in the southern part of Cochabamba, where the Municipal Garbage and Trash Pile is located. Description of Project funded by CIRCLE: Provide incentives (like skills training and educational opportunities) for children to attend school and quit their informal jobs (as trash collectors or other supplementary ones). A set of activities will be developed to change the mindsets of parents about the importance of education and to prevent children from working. These will include creating environmental brigades, talking community walks, and having athletic competitions. As one of the goals of the project proposed by parents, the community would like to have an educative center in the Kara Kara neighborhood to provide education for each grade. Because the children in this area live by the garbage dumps, the program curricula in the education center will also incorporate environmental education and safety precautions. Children will be taught daily hygiene for themselves and their homes as well as and protection against high levels of contamination. Project Targets: Enrollment: 145 children of Kara Kara Annex and 1100 students of Obispo Anaya, 1,300 parents Persistence: 100% Transition: none listed Completion: 200% |
