Objective # 2 - Strengthening Formal and Informal Educational System

Description of Organization:
African Development Aid Association (ADAA) is a registered non-profit organization created in 1988. Initially the organization had the objective of assisting children orphaned as a result of the infamous 1984/85 famine.

Since 1992, ADAA has evolved and shifted its emphasis from relief to development. AADA operates in the sector of food security, education, health, micro-credits, and education. ADAA has established 36 non-formal basic educational programs, 15 of which have been turned over to the Government. Currently ADAA runs 21 NFBE. ADAA also provides hostel services to needy high school children coming from outlining areas.

Description of Project funded by CIRCLE:
The major objective of the Non-formal Basic Education/Alternative Basic Education Project is to deliver innovative basic education/ alternative education to those children who at present are unable to access both existing primary schools and NFBECs within the district due to heavy workload. The laborer/working children who abstain from attending education opportunity due to the fact that they are fetching water and fuel wood from distant areas, look after herds/ livestock, and support their mothers by assisting with domestic chores. These children serve as the primary beneficiaries of this intended intervention. Approximately 900 working children and 200 adults will directly benefit from the project.

The project proposes to renovate 5 non–formal basic education centers in the selected localities and to develop the capacity of the concerned communities to manage and operate these centers sustainably in partnership with District Education Office.

ADAA will also organize sensitization forum (workshop) on the education and rights of children and women at the district level and conduct 2 sensitization meetings at community level.

Project Targets (Common Indicators):
Enrollment: 900 children
Retention: 90% will stay in the program
Transition: 90% of the total number transfer to nearby formal schools
Completion: 87% (785 children) will complete the program
