GADS has implemented three education projects in the District of Bamako, financed by World Education over a 5-year period for an amount of 100 million CFA. This project aimed at the creation of community schools, construction and equipment of classroom, training of PTAs, and a functional literacy program. In the region of Sikasso, GADS has implemented an environmental project funded by World Education to establish civic action groups and organize water management, garbage collection, and other activities. GADS has also implemented several health projects in partnership with the National AIDS program, the University of Montreal, and others. Description of Project funded by CIRCLE: The purpose of the UAC-funded project is to accommodate refugee children in a transit center. The target children are those who have attended school previously (before the conflict in Cote d'Ivoire) and who will benefit from refresher classes and activities aimed at integrating them into their new environment. (The transit center is already established and was previously supported by UNICEF.) The activities undertaken by GADS will help to prevent child labor, as they involve parents, local authorities, and as the school management board in the dialogue about the need for transitional programs and prevention of repeat trafficking. By the end of the project, GADS expects to enroll at least 30 children (formerly in school or to-be-enrolled); to provide 10 desks for the public school; and to involve the parent-teacher's association as well as school management board to insure sustainability.
