Project's Primary Objective: Objective # 1 – Public Awareness

Description of Organization: The Centro Nicaragüense Promoción de la Juventud y la Infancia “Dos Generaciones” is a non-profit, non-governmental organization, that was legally established on April 3rd, 1990. The goal of this institution is to advocate for children’s rights. Attention is given to the importance of human dignity, human condition and status as citizens. Dos Generaciones aims to contribute to the human and social advancement of Nicaraguans. The institution is committed to cultivating their personal growth, as well as fostering their rights, and their social empowerment. The means to accomplish these goals is by raising the community’s awareness of Human Rights, with an emphasis on children and youth, focusing on problems of child labor, violence, and principally the participation and influence on policy-making at the macroeconomic level. Dos Generaciones targets: (1) the prevention, attention and rehabilitation of psychosocial problems that negatively impact the development of children and adolescents, their families and communities; (2) the organization of the community and the political influence in decision-making regarding governmental and non-governmental policies that directly affects their development; and (3) institutional strengthening, in view of generating needed abilities and competencies.

Description of Project funded by CIRCLE: Access, promotion and persistence of children and adolescents in schools in the Acahualinca Neighborhood is a project whose goal is to increase public awareness regarding the hazards of child labor and the relevance of education. The project will benefit 400 child laborers not enrolled in schools, specifically those working at garbage dumps, 250 child laborers enrolled in educational sytems, 150 parents and 50 teachers and 20 community leaders and 946 potential children, adding to a total of 1816 beneficiaries. To reach this goal Dos Generaciones will:
  • Carry out an educational and child labor needs assessment to establish a baseline;
  • Organize 16 groups with 16 children each to attend 3 workshops on free and obligatory education, relevance of education, and results of the community needs assessment;
  • Implement a literacy program for 20 groups with 10 children in each for a six-month period, 3 times a week;
  • Organize 6 workshops targeting 25 parents each to participate on presentations and discussions about free and obligatory education, relevance of education and community situations;
  • Train 2 groups with 25 teachers each on the 4 main themes: free and obligatory education, shared responsibilities, educational methodologies and child labor hazards;
  • Twelve meetings with the Commission of Child Labor to present community needs and identify alternatives to increase educational levels;
  • 10 meetings with 50 community representatives to discuss individual and collective agreements regarding education and child labor at the local level and to establish a network;
  • Train 50 community leaders on leadership, free and obligatory education and shared social responsibility;
  • Train 25 community leaders to participate in a community watch program;
  • Train 20 community leaders on free and obligatory education, shared responsibilities, and individual roles in the education of child laborers;
  • Organize a theater class with 30 children for a 10-month period with 3 classes per week to prepare plays related to the relevance of education to be performed in schools and public spaces; and
  • Discussions with teachers regarding respect and violence regarding children.

Project Targets (Common Indicators):
Enrollment: 400 new children enrolled in educational system
Persistence: 90% of the total number of beneficiaries (1,211 children indirectly and directly)
Transition: 90% of the children that persist their studies (1,090 children)
Completion:
