Budget Amount: $2,894.00 NGO contact and website: Mr. Nim Bahadur Nepali Sahutol, Sejwaltakura VDC Salyan District, Rapti Zone Nepal Phone: 088–520051 Project's Primary Objective: Objective # 1 – Raise awareness of the importance of education for all children Objective # 2 - Strengthen formal and transitional education systems Description of Organization: The Dalit Development Society (DDS) is a local non-governmental organization, which has been working for Dalit upliftment since 2001. It was established to conduct programs with the aims of a) increasing Dalit participation in the development activities of various government and non-government agencies, b) promoting income generation activities and the overall development of the Dalit community, c) conducting activities in support of Nepal's present constitutional democracy, nationality, human rights, and socio- culture activities, and d) supporting education, health and sanitation, and communication in Dalit communities. The DDS has successfully completed peace and conflict management activities with the participation of intellectuals, social workers, and concerned agencies. It has organized various seminars and workshops and also disseminated peace restoration messages in remote areas of the district. Similarly, DDS conducted a workshop to make rules and regulations on community forest management and a Forest Action Plan in three VDCs of Salyan district, with the financial assistance of IFA - CARE . At present, DDS is conducting a skills development and awareness program for the Dalit community, with the cooperation of UNDP's peace and development process. As part of the program, DDS formed nine women groups to mobilize a savings-and-credit program, and has provided workshops, seminars, and training in fabric cutting and sewing to the groups' members. DDS is also supporting a children's peace and development program in three VDCs, with the cooperation of UNDP/SPDI and CAR-Network Kathmandu. Description of Project funded by CIRCLE: Under its UAC, DDS is focusing on awareness raising among the Dalit population, a marginalized social group which resists sending its children into schools which are oriented toward the majority population, especially when poverty makes the income of child laborers so significant. The goal of the project is to reduce the child labor in this society by raising awareness, especially among parents, of the importance of education and child rights. Messages will include information on the hazards of child labor and the long-term importance of education for all. Beneficiaries will be children of Dalit and conflict victims. In addition to awareness raising, DDS will distribute education material to the Dalit, and mobilize a child club to reduce child labor. It will also coordinate rural communities and youth to create a welcoming environment for Dalit within schools, thereby increasing formal school enrollment. Additionally, DDS will conduct NFE classes for the targeted children. The following are the primary activities:
